A few words from the judge
Amanda Shepherd:

"Close, close, call. You all made it
hard to choose! I love the illustrations and based my contest winner on concept. I was looking for a concept
that would read quickly as a fun thinkjotdraw and yet be unique
and wildly creative."

… Amanda's thoughts …

"One of my favorite art directors once told me — all it is, is problem solving … we are visual problem solvers."

"So here are my thoughts: design/fonts/type styles — these can be key to driving your designs in an project like this. You can choose fonts organize your type design to emphasize your concept. Will you box the title? Free form the title? What fits with my illustration? This can pull the whole thing together — have some fun with it. What if the title is really huge?"

… more trivia thoughts from Amanda…

"Check out at Eric Rohmans book My Friend Rabbit everything in that book is a simplification of motion and design... he drives the reader with lines and motion.... its way way cool."

"Don't get overwhelmed. Consider everything an experiment … we have to have fun with it. We have to try new things we have to be crazy— that is what we do. Feed your creative spirit."

WINNER
Jannie Ho: I love the imagination in this. The selection of different elements tbrings the concept together well. The thoughts and scribbles of a creative machine... it is fun and intriguing... lots of textures and white space. I love the juxdposition of bird and brain... that made me laugh ..it might not have been intended, but bird brain is really fun. I also like how the birds are different colors. Its just a fun read.

SECOND PLACE
Nina Seven: I love this and it made my decision difficult. This was well thought out and it had a great overall concept. the notebook paper looks great - coffee circles were funny!! And the dog is fabulous!!

Judith Vrba: love love love the cat - love the patterns in the dress and cat — Walking the cat would be a challenge — I tried to get my cat to go for a bike ride down a hill once … it was hilarious.

HONORABLE MENTION
Andi Butler: Nice texture in this! It makes the illustration unique and the characters are fun. How could you make each character unique? How could they each have their own personality? I had an art director ask me that about cats one...she said make your cats each with personality … Also wanted to add this has a strong concept. good job.

HONORABLE DOG MENTION
Melissa Langer: Love, love, love the dog! This dog has so much personality and character. I have never seen anything like him. This is a great thing -- very close to a portfolio piece... but wondered how you might place him in an environment - or how is he going to occupy his space. He could just simply be on a patterned square ... oh wow what if you put him in a shoe? Like he is a little little dog.

Kelly Kuechle: Great concept. Great execution. Your shapes are well designed -- and good white space too. Love the lightbulb on the back too. This reminds me of Charley Harper's or Mary Blair's work ... simple lovely shapes. Nicely designed.

Louisa Bertman: Wow, these portraits are fabulous. Really interesting color. Nice spontaneous feel to it - very modern. I see where you going with the einstein thought.. nice touch. I wondered how you might include the title.

Christina Irizarry-Santiago: Hey, I love these little moving creatures. An interesting approach. I wondered if you could keep the line work and add light solid colors for variation. Title space?

Joanna Wright: You know this is wonderful. I wondered if it needs a bit more development - for concept. This character is lovely as it reminds us all of who we are and what we do. I like the black and white ... (it reminds me of Peter Reynolds books). I wondered if you had investigated color... (not that you have to do anything with color). Also wondered what you might do with the title?

Scott Brooks: This is great ... once again I wondered what you would do with the title ... and what font you might choose. How would you emphasize your style on the whole page? Nice varied linework. Great character. How could you use your character on the page with more movement - making a more dynamic design?

Giorgia Guilianelli: Wow, this is wildly creative. I love the line work and patterning. Do we need more of a focus area? I am not sure … but I wonder if there was one thing the design might be driving to — And also wonder how you would approach the title.

Thanks to everyone who entered, come back soon for more and details about the next thinkjotdraw contest!
